Helping the body heal itself is one of the newest ways to help relieve pain and damage in the body. Platelet-rich Plasma therapy is one category of regenerative medicine meant to do just that.
In this article, we will go over what platelet-rich plasma therapy is, and what chronic issues in the body it would help.
What is Platelet-rich Plasma Therapy:
PRP therapy is an amazing yet simple option to help your body heal itself. Plasma and platelets are two things found in the blood – Platelets are what activate to bring healing into damaged areas of the body, whereas plasma is simply the carrier of the platelets.
The process involves drawing a patient’s blood, running it through a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, then injecting it to the area where there is tissue damage. This provides the area of the body that is working very hard to fix itself with added help to speed up the process and make it a success!
What Specific Issues is PRP Good For?
PRP therapy is great for shoulder pain including rotator cuff tears, tendon issues such as tendinitis, tennis elbow or golfer’s elbow.
Platelet-rich plasma is useful for soft tissue damage as well (as mentioned above) making it less necessary for steroid injections and other anti-inflammatory measures.
What to Expect During PRP Therapy:
The injection itself is administered in much the same way as our nerve blocks. Once the blood has been withdrawn from one area in the body, it is then processed for re-injection. During the PRP injection, Dr. Henriquez would use our guidance machines to place the needle in the site of the damaged tissue.
There are very few side effects to this type of treatment since you are just placing the patient’s blood back into their own body.
